ビートルズはデビュー前の1961年3月からデビュー後の1965年6月までに延べ52回に渡ってトータルで300曲近いパフォーマンスを、 BBCのスタジオや観客を入れた劇場で生演奏で披露していた。ビートルズにとってテレビやラジオへの出演はレコード・セールスへの重要なプロモーションの場であり、バンドのライブ活動同様に必要不可欠なものであったはずだ。 1960年代当時はラジオ局が1日の放送時間の中でレコード音源をオンエア出来る時間数が組合によって厳しく制限されていた。それこそがＢＢＣに於けるライブ演奏の量の多さの理由なのである。熱心なファンやコレクター達がＢＢＣライブ音源に特別な価値を見い出す理由は、その演奏曲目のユニークさにあるだろう。実際にバンドが最も頻繁にＢＢＣラジオに出演した1963年にはレコード化されなかったカバー曲が大量にＢＢＣの番組で演奏されオンエアされている。それらの演奏曲はバンドがデビュー前にハンブルグのスター・クラブや、リバプールのキャバーン・クラブで好んで演奏していたレパートリーであった。これらの貴重な番組の音源は基本的に当時の本放送時一回きりのオンエアであり、バンドのＢＢＣラジオ初登場から20周年を記念する1982年3月の「THE BEATLES AT THE BEEB」というＢＢＣ特番のオンエアまでほとんど顧みられなかった。また不幸なことに当時のＢＢＣではオンエアの済んだマスター・テープは予算の都合上、消去された上に他の番組に使い回しされたため、後年ＢＢＣ自らが音源の重要性に気付き局内のアーカイブを探索した時には、大部分の番組の保存状況は非常に悪く絶望的なまでにマテリアルは残されていなかった。満を持してリリースされる本作、コンプリート・ＢＢＣ・テープスではその収録内容において、より綿密な推敲や作業を施し、考え得る最大のアップグレード、従来より長い収録タイムといった事項に重点を置き、ライブ演奏が披露された当時のオリジナル放送を中心にオンエア順に出来る限り最良の状態で復元し収録しようと試みたものである。 Vol.1からVol.4まで全16枚のディスクの完結編。数あるBBC音源の決定盤として是非コレクションに加えておいていただきたいと思う。 DISC One Saturday Club 5th Birthday Edition, Oct. 5, 1963 Complete and Unedited from Master Tapes, Hour 1 Host: Brian Matthew 01.
